Kyanite on Quartz
stock #20.1-617
Barra do Salinas Mining District, Coronel Murta
Minas Gerais, Brazil
9 x 6.4 x 2.2 CM (cabinet)
price: $800
new year 2021

Intense bright blue crystals of Kyanite are clinging to a small matrix of Quartz and Kyanite. These crystals are transparent to translucent, they glow an intense blue with just a little backlight. The specimen is shown with a mild backlight in these photos. In excellent condition these have sharp terminations and some slight color zoning. Kyanite is not a rare mineral and quite a lot comes from Brazil, but such fine, complete undamaged crystals that are so well-positioned are quite rare. Far better impact in person, a very choice Kyanite from the find a few years ago at Barra do Salinas in Minas Gerais, Brazil.

Vesuvianite - gem crystal with unusual color
stock #AX-35-500
Jeffrey Mine, Asbestos (now Val-des-Sources, Estrie,
Quebec, Canada
2.7 x .8 x .7 CM (thumbnail)
price: $550
new year 2021

A choice, flawless crystal that is fully transparent and has complex internal crazing. Incredibly lustrous. A competition level thumbnail that is undamaged on all sides. The color of this Vesuvianite is unlike nearly all greens from the Jeffrey Mine, it is a dark asparagus green with yellow highlights. Jeffrey Mine Vesuvianites are thought by many to be by far the best in the world. The locality has produced many habits and vivid colors, this will be a fine addition to any Jeffrey suite or just as a fine quality thumbnail.

Grossular - gemmy crystals
stock #AX-16-570
Jeffrey Mine, Asbestos (now Val-des-Sources, Estrie,
Quebec, Canada
2.2 x 2 x .6 CM (thumbnail)
price: $175
new year 2021

Thumbnail specimen of fine transparent Garnet. These are well-defined, isolated and brilliantly lustrous. The Garnets are perched on a very thin plate of matrix, all show glassy striations on the larger faces. From the great Jeffrey Mine, this thumbnail is a fine but scaled-down version of larger specimens that can cost a fortune when available.

Quartz - optically clear
stock #20.1-881
Penas Blancas, San Pablo de Borbur
Boyaca, Colombia
5.3 x 3.7 x 2.2 CM (small cabinet/ large miniature)
price: $380
new year 2021

Some of the world's clearest and most perfect Quartz has come from the finds in the ridge above the Peñas Blancas Emerald Mines in Boyacá, Colombia. This is an incredibly clean highly lustrous example, one of a small carefully selected suite we obtained at the mine. The luster is brilliant and almost impossible to see in a photograph. This zone has recently produced a lot of good to fine Quartz but very close exam finds that there are very few truly perfect examples, nearly all have at least some chips or rough spots on terminations. This is a remarkably limpid and flawless piece that can act as a prism to make rainbows. Nothing like the average material from here, this is textbook perfect. As is sometimes seen at this locale this piece has some extra faces in corners adding some nice modifications.

Demantoid (Andradite) - vintage classic garnet
stock #20.1-616
Val Malenco, Sondrio Province
Lombardy, Italy
6.3 x 5.2 x 2.7 CM (cabinet)
price: $370
new year 2021

A chain of linked line of apple-green Garnets on a Rodingite/Serpentine matrix. The specimen is from the old locality of Val Malenco and was collected prior to 1905. The form and color of these Andradites are classic and immediately recognizable. In very good condition as seen, just one very small chip is noted, the crystals reach up to 1.3 CM in a 4.7 CM line. The luster is waxy and the crystals are all transparent to translucent. In person the color is close to a good deep Peridot hue.

Carnelian - red Quartz nodule
stock #1047-JM-1645
Fassa, Val de Fassa, Trentino -Alto Adige
South Tyrol, Italy
4.6 x 4.3 x 2.8 CM (miniature)
price: $360
new year 2021

A half nodule of bright red Quartz (crypto-crystaline variety Carnelian) from Fassa which is now in Italy (since 1919) but at the time this was found was in Austria. From the Phil Scalisi collection and also was in the John Marshall collection Translucent to transparent, an excellent example of an old European Carnelian gem that is just not often seen for sale.

Azurite on Malachite
stock #AX-3-045
Milpillas Mine, Cuitaca, Municipio de Santa Cruz
Sonora, Mexico
3.7 x 2.6 x 1.6 CM (small miniature/ large thumbnail (toenail))
price: $1350
new year 2021

From the great finds at Milpillas, this is a very fine small miniature in perfect condition with excellent esthetics. The Azurite crystals stand up from the contrasting green Malachite which covers a thin shard of matrix. These are translucent on the edges with a brilliant blue. A few tiny spots on the Azurites show Malachite alterations and the overall luster is very bright. With a close exam or under magnification the crystals are seen as compound prisms made from aligned crystals in an almost rosette structure. This piece is more impressive in person, and has a lot of display impact for its size. When Milpillas was active it produced lots of good Azurite and also a few really great pieces. Finding an above average specimen with rich color contrast in perfect condition (and at a fair price) was never easy. This is that sort of piece.

Quartz - classic locale
stock #15.1-732
Vizille, Grenoble, Isere
Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, France
9.4 x 7.3 x 7.7 CM (cabinet)
price: $230
new year 2021

The Quartz localities clustered near Grenoble in Isere, France were sources of some of the most classic and special Quartz specimens in the world. This piece shows well the forms of the slender clear Quartz prisms perched on an altered Siderite "Limonite" matrix. In exceptional undamaged condition, this is from the Dr. Warren Johansson collection, he purchased this in 1984. A nice sized cabinet specimen that shows well the clarity and luster that these are famed for at a reasonable cost for one of these European classics.
