Gigantic stacked red-purple octahedrons in symetrical position. The color is good the luster is glossy and there are even some gemmy zones. The largest distinct crystal face is 7.3 CM across and shows triangular hoppering. For the size this is a very impressive specimen and is from the early finds over 20 years ago.
Spinel on Marble
stock #8 -GC-822
Yen Bai Province,
5.8 x 3.9 CM (small cabinet/ large miniature)
A sharp, bright red Spinel octahedral crystal perched perfectly on a white marble/calcite matrix. No damage, fine esthetics and overall very attractive presentation. well above average quality and sharpness.
Yen Bai Province,
4.4 x 2.7 CM (miniature)
A Ruby specimen with great form and color. Some small gemmy areas and an overall translucence make these intergrown crystals very eyecatching. Some of these crystals are sold in the markets of Yunnan Province, China (this was) and often wrongly labeled as Chinese. There are 3 intergrown crystals on this piece, I first suspected that there was a repair or glue job on it (it looked suspicious) but after testing it seems fully natural. The lower crystal is perfectly doubly terminated but not seen in the photos. A real nice example that did not get cut and has strong esthetic appeal.
A purplish-red large Spinel twin over 5 cm across is the base for a smaller octahedron and some additional crystals. Shows typical etched surfaces and has some very glassy faces. An attractive display piece that is also quite instructive, it presents the twinning in a textbook form with a non twinned example as a contrast.
Sharp. lusterous and with deep purple-red color, this is a fine Spinel with strong form. Gemmy with glass-like surfaces, the transparency is above average for such a large crystal. The faces alternate from a melted or rounded form to sharp prismatic. The crystal shows well "spinel twinning" and is exceptionally sharp for its size. No damage, displays well.
A sharp, glassy and partially gemmy single crystal of deep purple spinel. Not a common color or hue this is quite a good value for a very cute toenail. The backside of the crystal is imperfect at one upper edge. Though it is not visible from display side, the price is very attractive as a result.
Deep red Spinel (spinel twinned) with good sharrp form, A very eyecatching thumnail, that is not quite a true gemmy transparency but is translucent on the edges. The color of this one is far better than most and the form is distinctive. Attractively priced too.
