A very good matrix Garnet specimen with the classic style of Piedmont region Grossular. The crystals are sharp and translucent- a deep red when backlit but with normal lighting (as in these photos) typically look darker, almost black. In excellent condition a very good locality piece with bright luster.
A very old, classic specimen mounted on a 19th century wooden pedestal. Old labels are included one of which shows a date of 1810 or 1870 (very hard to read). Either way this is a classic, antique piece with very good condition, form and clarity in the body. Type locality and a great addition to any display of vintage or modern tourmaline.
Calcite & Quartz (Cumberland habit)
stock #AX-20-155
Sa Duchessa Mine, Oridda Valley, Domusnovas, South Sardinia Province
Sardinia,
Italy
5 x 3.7 x 3 CM (miniature)
price: $200
pre Tucson 2015 update
An odd yet attractive very old Sardinian Calcite specimen with a second generation of Quartz in "Cumberland habit". The Quartz also has numerous inclusions and some is in stacked groupings. There is considerable Hematite on and in many crystals here, adding nice color contrast. In good condition and attractive, most everything is doubly terminated.
A very attractive (and genuine natural) Sulfur with a sharp, well formed 3.2 CM crystal nicely perched on a Calcite/ Aragonite matrix. There are petroleum inclusions in the Sulfur that prove that this is natural and not one of the common fakes. An older (pre 1960's) piece with great composition, there are some tiny edge chips visible. If perfect the price would be far more, but it is still an attractive, reasonable cost classic mineral specimen.
Barite (gem clear w. phantoms)
stock #AX-19-230
Sulcis
Sardinia,
Italy
5.5 x 3.5 x 2.8 CM (small cabinet/ large miniature)
price: $245
An older, well-formed amber colored Barite from the Sulcis area of Caligari in Sardinia. Ex. Mineral Gallery (K. Ward) This shows several good phantoms with backlighting, and has a second generation overgrowth in some areas. Over all in fairly good condition there is contacting on one side and at the rear, small edge chipping is present but not easily seen from the logical display angle. A nice, good color piece from a classic local with the main crystal reaching 4.8 CM.
Phosgenite (exceptional)
stock #AX-16-196
Monteponi Mine, Iglesias, Carbonia
Sardinia,
Italy
4.4 x 2.8 CM (miniature)
price: $3500
A real prize winning miniature! (First Prize miniature category at MTL Mineral EXPO). It is impressive, esthetic gemmy and has classic form, from the most classic locality, Monteponi. An older specimen from this long closed mine, it is composed of 3 main intersecting crystals. Close exam finds very minor chipping mostly just on the base and backside, it can be displayed "eye clean". For this delicate mineral it is "virtually perfect". From an older collection, this quality is simply not for sale today. An older collection number is on the reverse side, it can be removed if that side is to be displayed. Choice!
Stibnite
stock #A7-531-(698)
Grosseto Province
Tuscany,
Italy
5 x 4.6 CM (small cabinet/ large miniature)
price: $260
A nice Italian Stibnite from Grosseto, with a great gunmetal silver luster. Crystals up to 3 CM long are in sprays on a dark sulfide matrix. Our labels from previous collections do not list the mine but this is a very good match for the Pereta mine in Scansano. Mostly undamaged showing a variety of terminations, some minor damage is noted but not easily noticed. Ex Larry White collection 1960's vintage but likely collected long before then. This is much nicer in person
A fine alpine cleft Pink Fluorite that is NOT Swiss or French but a much rarer Italian Piedmont piece! With magnification this is especially striking, the octahedrons are glassy, sharp and show complexities, they are set in a vug lined with spiky Clinozoisites and glassy rhomb form Adularia. All with a sprinkle of bright green Clinoclore (Amesite?). Very rare to see any of these for sale this is an especially nice older specimen of pre 1960 vintage. Ex Bill Hlaydsz collection.
