A fantastic blue cap Tourmaline . The main crystal with four distinct bright colors dominates this esthetic miniature. The smaller side crystal is also a blue cap with three colors and a large percentage of bright pink. In perfect, undamaged condition, when examined under good magnification even more color zones can be seen as faint areas between the main parts. From Stak Nala which is one of the world's best localities for fine Tourmaline. From time to time some exotic and uncommon color combinations like this are found there. The dark area in the middle is actually a dark green when backlit with strong illumination. A fine addition to any suite of gem crystals or tourmaline collection.

A fine, super colorful thumbnail Tourmaline from the Larry White collection. Great condition, gemmy transparency and vivid pink to red color that contrast with the purple Lepidolite. This is currently mounted on one of Larry's handmade wooden bases but it can easily be removed if desired. A slight bend near the termination and some color zoning add extra interest. In addition the crystal shows a very good dichroic color shift in polarized light. Choice small thumbnail. A classic USA gem crystal, esthetic, and even nicer in person.

From a find about 12 years ago in Yunnan Province, China. Pink Tourmalines with redder caps that came from the pegmatites of Gaoligong Shan is what seems to have been a mix of Elbaite and Liddiacoatite perhaps in zones. This piece shows the typical morphology of the find and has a nice bubble-gum color. The outer edges have contacts and chipping but there are several complete terminated crystals with no damage, the largest being 1 cm tall.

5.4 x 3.2 x 3.1 (cabinet)
price: $1750
A big, glassy crystal with a very dark blue-green shaft becomes a lighter blue near the top, then grades to a water clear zone and ends with a thin reddish purple cap. Well terminated with a transparent flat top and with great luster. In very good condition, with only very tiny bits of edge wear that is not easy to spot and a small unobtrusive chip on the back. An older piece this color combination is not very common. The top portion is all gem clear but the majority of the crystal is rather dark and only a little light passes through. Displays well and a good value for a stout single crystal. A hefty 106 grams.

A doubly terminated gem Elbaite crystal is partly wrapped in a "cloak" of Lepidolite. The Tourmaline color is a mix of green and blue hues, it is zoned but not sharply, the colors grade together gradually. In excellent condition there is no naked eye visible damage or chipping on the Elbaite. With strong magnification two very slight nicks (under 0.5mm) can be found, this is essentially perfect. The "bottom" termination is a flat basal type while the top is a stacked series of angled faces. Especially pretty with backlight, the association with the sparkling Lepidolite makes a nice contrast. Ex Charles M. Noll collection, 18.7 grams

Tourmaline from Mozambique can be incredibly choice and this is a very nice example. Mostly a purple- red color with a yellow green zone, this crystal is strongly dichroic. The Elbaite exhibits a striking color change when rotated in front of a computer screen. Mostly all good gem grade, transparent and very lustrous, this crystal weighs 42.9 grams. The backside of the termination shows some areas that were recrystallized and some small bruises so it is not perfect but this is can be fully hidden by display angle and keeps the cost much lower as a result. Excellent value for a pretty tourmaline that is much better in person

A complex dark Tourmaline crystal that when backlit explodes with an intense deep indigo blue with a zone of green on the edges. From old finds at the remarkable locality of Barra do Salinas which is well known for very colorful and often deeply etched gem crystals. This specimen is the termination of complex prism, the faces are lustrous and the overall weight is 78 Grams, nearly all of good gem grade. There is old edge chipping most of which has been recrystallized, but despite the imperfections the color and luster make this a striking piece. Without any backlighting this is fairly dark and may look like a schorl at first, but when well lit the color is outstanding.

Santa Rosa

Brazil
3 x 1.5 x 1.4 CM (small miniature/ large thumbnail (toenail))
price: $420
A glassy, clean and many colored crystal of Elbaite from an old find (1970 vintage) at Santa Rosa. I count four or five colors at least with some gentle gradations. The termination is the flat basal type and has a hint of blue in some lighting but not so strong as a classic blue cap. In excellent condition though there are some tiny rough spots that are sub millimeter in size and not easy to see. A very nice gem crystal with a choice color pallet zoning from this get locale.
