Elbaite - Etched scepter crystal
stock #24.1-243-(DK)
Barra do Salinas Mining District, Coronel Murta
Minas Gerais,
Brazil
3.1 x 1.6 x 1.4 (thumbnail)
price: $2990
A very sharp, gem clear and vivid color scepter Tourmaline of the type that made Barra do Salinas famous. This is an older piece and in person far more gemmy and bright than most that are on the market today. It is certainly competition grade and stands out from most others of this material. The stem is well-etched and is also transparent seen through the complex striations. Super esthetic with a bright green cap that contrasts beautifully with the white, pink and red stem. This is still small enough to be a thumbnail but just barely. It is complete, undamaged, doubly terminated and has a display impact much bigger than the small size.
A fine gem crystal with intense blue color, this is an older specimen from the great Barra do Salinas in Brazil. Typical of good Barra Tourmalines, the exterior is etched and has a fibrous look, yet the inside is nearly all flawless gem grade. This has top blue color with bright luster, it is terminated with stepped habit and is undamaged. A small Lepidolite crystal on the side is a nice addition. Choice and better in person.

Pre Tucson
A single very clear gem Tourmaline crystal with a color that is a bit more dark blue than green in most light. The termination is complete with the distinctive etched steps of good Barra do Salinas tips. Bright luster and glows well with backlighting. The costs of any blue Elbaite has gotten very high recently, this is a much more down to earth price and very good value.

A glassy Tourmaline with stepped prismatic terminations weighing 37.45 Grams. Classic Minas Gerais crystal from old finds at Barra do Salinas. This is mostly a dark green with some blue zone near the bottom section. This displays best with backlight it looks dark without some. In very clean condition, no damage by naked eye and looks fine on all sides. Ex Larry White collection, Larry was a well respected collector with very good quality judgment.

5.3 x 4.9 x 3.4 CM (small cabinet/ large miniature)
price: $160
A dark green lustrous Tourmaline crystal with geometric etching and complex faces. The green color is hard to see without strong lighting, but it does light up with backlight and glows an olive green to yellowish color. Without that lighting (not used in the photos) this looks almost black. At some angles this looks more like a Navegadora Spessartine than an Elbaite. Ex collection of Les Hitchings, obtained on a trip to Brazil in 1966.

Intense bright blue crystals of Kyanite are clinging to a small matrix of Quartz and Kyanite. These crystals are transparent to translucent, they glow an intense blue with just a little backlight. The specimen is shown with a mild backlight in these photos. In excellent condition these have sharp terminations and some slight color zoning. Kyanite is not a rare mineral and quite a lot comes from Brazil, but such fine, complete undamaged crystals that are so well-positioned are quite rare. Far better impact in person, a very choice Kyanite from the find a few years ago at Barra do Salinas in Minas Gerais, Brazil.

12.5 x 7.9 x 4.2 CM (cabinet)
price: $1200
Terminated and gemmy, bright blue Kyanite crystals are well exposed on a Quartz matrix. The Kyanites are transparent and most have a deeper blue "racing stripe" down the center of the flat blades. Many of the crystals are doubly terminated and reach 10 CM long. Kyanite is a fairly common mineral but it is certainly not common in such an esthetic, delicate array. Exceptional color and quality, it is hard to capture the luster of the crystals in photographs. When this is backlit the intense blue color is incredible.

A complex dark Tourmaline crystal that when backlit explodes with an intense deep indigo blue with a zone of green on the edges. From old finds at the remarkable locality of Barra do Salinas which is well known for very colorful and often deeply etched gem crystals. This specimen is the termination of complex prism, the faces are lustrous and the overall weight is 78 Grams, nearly all of good gem grade. There is old edge chipping most of which has been recrystallized, but despite the imperfections the color and luster make this a striking piece. Without any backlighting this is fairly dark and may look like a schorl at first, but when well lit the color is outstanding.
