Ex John Marshall collection, a very fine old Tri-state area Galena and Calcite. The Tri-state zone was at one time legendary for the quantity of specimens that seemed to be everywhere in the 1930-60 era. For the most part they are gone now, and higher quality specimens like this that were never plentiful are quite rare to see. The Galena has the desirable stepped geometric faces and gunmetal silver color with bright luster. The Calcites are clustered like a crown and are a great contrast. This specimen seems to be a part of a selection purchased by John from Boodle Lane, the legendary eccentric Tri-State dealer. John bought twice from Boodle about 65 years ago, he had a good eye and selected only special or unusual pieces. Certainly a choice Galena from anyplace and very fine as a tri-state specimen.

9.3 x 5.2 x 4.4 CM (cabinet)
price: $350
Classic old Pitcher Field (Tri State District) Galena. An esthetic cluster of grey patina cubes with modified corners on a drusy Sphalerite covering the Chert matrix. In excellent condition, the Galena arrangement is very three dimensional and the cube at the top on the tower is 2 CM in diameter. The backside of the matrix is covered with larger Sphalerites some of which are red and lustrous. The Tri state area was an incredibly productive zone into the early 1960 period when it shut down. At the time these specimens were plentiful (although better pieces were always much less common). Today these are all long gone and good esthetic material is quite rare. Far better in person, this is not at all average.

pre Tucson 2015 update
From the classic Tri-state locale of Pitcher, this is an esthetic, textbook perfect specimen with incredible form. The elongated cube main crystal has a fine gunmetal luster and color, but it is wonderfully decorated with oriented octahedral Galenas that are perfectly aligned across the faces. The geometry and architecture of this specimen is incredible, it is in excellent condition. This comes from early mining prior to the 1930's, and is far better in person.

8x 5.4 CM (cabinet)
price: $150
A much better than average tri-state classic, ex John Marshall collection. Crystals to 3.6 CM on a thin matrix plate range in color from translucent ruby-red to black. Pitcher Field produced huge numbers of Sphalerites 40+ years ago, it is now rare to see good ones. In fine condition, well-composed and far more attractive than is typical.
