Titanite - Northeast USA classic
stock #23.1-343
Acushnet Quarry (Warren Bros.) Acushnet, Bristol County
Massachusetts, United States
4.4 x 1.9 x .8 CM (miniature)
price: $320
Spring 23

A large, (huge for the locality), doubly terminated and complete Titanite crystal from the Acushnet Quarry. Famed for finds of Apatites some years ago, this quarry has unusual geology and had been the source of alpine cleft type specimens especially Pericline, Adularia and Apatite. A few Titanites were also found, usually small and encrusted with Chlorite. This sizable crystal is the largest I have ever seen, somewhat crude but undamaged, complete on all edges and has translucent rich green color. Very choice New England specimen.

Titanite - twinned crystals on Adularia
stock #8.1-007
Dassu, Braldu Valley, Skardu District
Gilgit-Baltistan, Pakistan
6.3 x 4.6 x 3.8 CM (cabinet)
price: $320
Post Tucson 2022

Twinned gemmy crystals of Titanite on contrasting white Adularia crystals. A classic assemblage of Alpine cleft type minerals, this is an attractive and well-crystalized piece with a 2 CM Titanite. The Titanite is transparent in large part though some areas have inclusions that make it more translucent. The crystal is the type sometimes called a "drill bit twin" and shows this habit very well.

Titanite var. Sphene
stock #15.1-943-(CN2901)
Capelinha
Minas Gerais, Brazil
4.8 x 4.2 x 2.8 CM (miniature)
price: $440
Spring 2020

A choice cluster of old time Sphene crystals with a small bit of matrix. In person these are quite gemmy, very transparent and have fantastic growth structures on several faces. In fine condition there is one small chip on a crystal edge that is the logical base of the specimen and not visible on display. Ex Commercial Mineral Corp (a NYC based dealer) The label for this dates after 1956 though the vintage is likely mid sixties. Ex Charles M. Noll and Jimmie Dufoe collections as well. Presents well from several angles, best appreciated in person.

Titanite (Sphene) on Orthoclase with Adularia, Clinochlore etc.
stock #19.1-256
Alchuri, Shigar Valley, Skardu District, Baltistan
Gilgit-Baltistan, Pakistan
3.6 x 3.3 x 1.4 CM (small miniature/ large thumbnail (toenail))
price: $290
Spring 2019

A fine twinned Sphene crystal is perched like an arrow on the matrix. Small adhering crystals of Schorl, Adularia and Clinoclore add some extra sparkle. The Titanite is very sharp, lustrous and gemmy in areas. Very fine condition, magnification finds some small contacts but otherwise in great shape and damage free.

Adularia with Titanite (Classic Alpine)
stock #18.1-441
Rotiaul. Guttannen, Hasli Valley
Bern, Switzerland
7.8 x 4.6 x 4.3 CM (cabinet)
price: $440

A super esthetic stack of perfect Adularia crystals in epitaxial arrangement hosting gem clear Titanites. Some selective coating of Chlorite on crystal faces of the Adulariaadds some contrast as well. This is a 360 degree piece it looks fine on all sides and has a strong esthetic arrangement. The main Titanite is 8mm perfect, gem clear flat prism with bright luster. A few tiny Quartz crystals are mixed into the matrix as well, overall a super fine arrangement of Alpine species.

Titanite (Sphene) - gemmy crystals
stock #AC-366
Campo do Boa mine, Capalinha
Minas Gerais, Brazil
5.9 x 3.8 x 3.1 CM (cabinet)
price: $340
Late Summer 2018

A brazillian specimen that was mined over 25 years ago. Very sharp, glassy twinned Sphenes on matrix up to 2.5 CM on matrix. The matrix is also covered on both sides with a druse of micro Titanite crystals that sparkle nicely. Some of the tiny Titanites seem to be untwinned which is rather rare but is known in a few specimens from this locale. The main crystals are well exposed from the matrix and show well from several angles. Some damage and contacts can be found on close exam but these do no stand out. The price reflects this, a good value for a very displayable specimen.

Titanite var Sphene - Classic New York
stock #17.1-804
Diana Township, Lewis County
New York, United States
7.9 x 4.4 x 2.8 CM (cabinet)
price: $220
Spring update

Vintage specimen with old EB Underhill label. Underhill donated his collection posthumously to Amherst College in 1888, so this piece and his handwritten label is older than that. Not many of these labels survive today and the Sphene specimen is also a very rare example from a classic locale. I have never seen another quite like this, the luster is very bright on the slender dark gem clear crystals in the protected vug. Microscope reveals tiny Clinochlore and what may be colorless Fluorites, not known from this locale. A nice slice of mineral history.

Titanite with Adularia, Byssolite, Apatite etc.
stock #15.1-1054-(SM2740)
Grischun (Grisons)
Graubunden, Switzerland
10.5 x 6.5 x 3.9 CM (cabinet)
price: $600
Winter 2016-17

An old Swiss classic Alpine specimen. Complexly structured matrix hosts several minerals in layers with gemmy green Titanites on the top. Beds of Byssolite needles have well-crystallized Adularia protruding and micro sprays of Apatite throughout. This displays the complex nature of mineralization in Alpine clefts very well. The Titanites crystals are up to 1 cm though most are smaller. Ex Charles M. Noll and Jim Dufoe collections.
