Phosgenite - vintage, classic locale
stock #17.1-854
Gibbas Mine, Villaputzu
South Sardinia Province, Italy
7.1 x 6.6 x 6.5 CM (cabinet)
price: $880
Early summer 2021

A rare specimen of Phosgenite from the Gibbas Mine of South Sardinia. This mine was active in 1851-1882 and flooded by 1890. Phosgenite is a rather uncommon Lead Chloride but specimens from this famous old locale are super rare (there are none on Mindat). Several milky white Phosgenite crystals from 1 to 2 CM across are clustered in a vug of altered Galena. This piece comes from the remarkable collection of Ruth and Andy Palmer and later William Hladysz. This was the study collection for Dr. Joe Mandarino's work and held many unusual and rare locality specimens. The Phosgenites are vividly fluorescent and are well-formed with a thin surface alteration. This is the only example from this location I have seen outside of a museum and is a quite a nice Phosgenite.
